There are several worldviews of indigenous justice in Ecuador. According to the constitution, in general, these are based on the ancestral uses and customs of the community. These have a conciliatory and corrective character (corporeal punishments that seek to purge the soul of evil) in the face of crimes. The sentences are decided through community councils or by the community leader. In order to be applicable, indigenous justice must meet four requirements: 1) That they are related to internal issues of the communities 2) That all the parties involved are indigenous 3) That it be within the territory of the communities 4) That the penalties be limited to the Western conception of Human Rights. Ordinary justice in Ecuador is based on courts and tribunals in a very similar way to that of other Latin American countries.
