After Israel allowed its Lebanese allies to massacre Palestinian refugees in Beirut in 1982, sending the remaining refugees in hiding. In the wake of the massacre, Jean Genet, a white French gay writer, stayed with Palestinian refugees, for a period of six months. This resulted in a moving, poetic account of literary journalism entitled “Four Hours in Shatila”, detailing the harrowed sufferings of the Palestinian refugees as witnessed by Genet. An excerpt from the text: “A photograph doesn’t show the flies nor the thick white smell of death. Neither does it show how you must jump over the bodies as you walk along from one corpse to the next.” In the same vein, Arundhati Roy’s “Walking with the Comrades” is a riveting account of the face-off between the Indian state and the Naxals. Staying with them for a period of time, Roy describes her days among the strategists and footsoldiers of the Naxal movement as she walks, eats and sleeps with them in the densest forests of Jharkhand.
