  • The European Commission would implement Strategy A before Strategy B for the formation of the new opposition party.

    Infoslide

For the purposes of this debate, you are part of a team of Venezuelan opposition members with resources and political experience. You are concerned about the population's lack of interest in the current opposition proposals from historically recognized parties, prompting you to propose the creation of a new party, with the aim of beginning the process of unifying the population to fight against the dictatorship. The team is considering two strategies for the formation of the new party: Strategy A consists of criticizing the current government as a leftist dictatorship. This implies emphasizing the damage caused by the leftist ideals and legislation promoted by the Chavez and Maduro governments, and presenting a right-wing model as a preferable alternative. Strategy A acknowledges that the main problem with the current government is corruption and dictatorship, but it promotes as part of its message that these problems are intrinsic to leftist governments. Strategy B focuses on the struggle for the social rights of the population. This implies dissociating the government from the principles of leftist political movements, recognizing progressive ideals, such as acknowledging class difference as a structural problem and the fight for gender equality rights. Unlike Strategy A, Strategy B concedes that the problem with the current government has nothing to do with political inclination but with dynamics of corruption and dictatorship.

  • This house believes that Biden should lift all sanctions on Venezuela.

    Infoslide

Since 2006, the United States has imposed a wide variety of sanctions on Venezuela. Among other aims, these prevent the Venezuelan government from accessing the U.S. financial system, freeze the bank accounts of the Maduro administration and block oil imports from the state oil and gas company. In 2017, Donald Trump tightened the sanctions with the aim of ousting Maduro in favour of an interim opposition government led by Juan Guaidó. Recently, Joe Biden took limited steps towards lifting sanctions on Venezuela, including allowing very limited natural resource extraction operations in Venezuela by the U.S. firm Chevron. The vast majority of US sanctions remain in place.

    Infoslide

The Legal Personality is the recognition of the rights of which an entity can enjoy or demand compliance from the State. When Nature is recognized as a Legal Personality, it implies that natural regions can be holders of rights such as their care and repair through representatives who protect the interests of Nature. An example of this may be the Whanganui River in New Zealand; said river whose resources were exploited was defended in a lawsuit against the New Zealand State by a Maori tribe which lives in it and has a spiritual connection with it. Upon winning the lawsuit, the Legal Personality of the River was recognized, which created a distinction between the protection of the rights of the tribe (eg economic compensation) and the rights of Nature (eg Restoration of its environment).
