  • In rapidly-developing megacities, This House Prefers the "chaotic warm approach" in urban planning as opposed to Le Corbusier’s approach

    Infoslide

A megacity is defined as a very large urban area, usually a metropolis, consisting of a main city supported by several satellite cities. Le Corbusier's concept of urban planning envisions polished infrastructures (wide roads, clear sidewalks, spacious public facilities etc.) within cities with well-defined sectors (clear separation of residential and commercial areas). A 'chaotic warm' approach is a city that looks “messy” from up above but feels 'warm' to its inhabitants: for example the presence of urban villages, city alleyways scattered with street food hawkers and hole-in-the-wall establishments. For the purpose of this debate, both approaches would also aim for cleanliness, relative law and order and security albeit in different ways of delivering/implementing them.

  • This house believes that it is in the interest of Canada to pursue the Century Initiative

    Infoslide

"The Century Initiative is a plan that advocates growing the population of Canada to 100 million by 2100 to reduce the burden on government revenues to fund health care, old age security, and other services. This includes increasing the population of megaregions. It suggests a population increase for the Greater Toronto Area from 8.8 to 33.5 million, the Greater Montreal region from 4.4 to 12.2 million, the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor from 2.8 to 15.5 million, the Greater Vancouver region from 3.3 to 11.9 million, the National Capital Region from 1.4 to 4.8 million, the Southwestern Ontario region from 1.2 to 2 million, and the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region from 800,000 to 1.7 million. The organization intends to reach its population goal through a massive increase in immigration and by investing in economic development around megaregions. Century Initiative forecasts predict that, without changes to Canadian immigration policy, the population of Canada will increase to 53 million people by the end of the century."

    Infoslide

Ontario Place is a tract of land owned by the City of Toronto that currently functions as a run-down waterfront park in central Toronto. In 2022, the Ontario government announced their intention to redevelop Ontario Place into a privately owned mega-spa/tropical retreat. The project has been mired with allegations of corruption and has been criticized for the use of taxpayer dollars to subsidize spa construction. Olivia Chow was elected mayor of Toronto on a progressive platform, a crucial part of which was to stop the Ontario Place development. In November 2023, Olivia Chow signed an agreement called “A New Deal for Toronto” with the Ontario Government to drop the city’s opposition to the Ontario Place redevelopment in exchange for a desperately needed one-time funding boost for the City of Toronto from the Ontario government.

  • This house opposes the 'sexscraper' plan

    Infoslide

Currently the city of Amsterdam has 3 separate red light districts which take up certain areas around the centre of the city. There is a plan to alter the 2 largest and most central of such districts. The plan entails closing a large portion of rooms in each of these 2 districts. However, every room which is closed in these areas will be moved to a new space in a newly built 'sexscraper' as a new erotic centre in an outer suburb. The building would be discrete from the outside, have a centralised security system, and would also have spaces in the building for other activities such as painting classes and debating.
