  • That Lebanon should abolish the confessional system

    Infoslide

Lebanon has a confessional political system, in which seats in parliament and other important political positions are proportionately reserved for representatives from certain religious communities. The president must be a Maronite Christian; the speaker of the Parliament, a Shi'a Muslim; and the prime minister, a Sunni Muslim. Seats in parliament must be equally split between Christians and Muslims. Elections are held to fill these seats. Within each religious group there are multiple political parties, who often rule in coalitions. It is estimated that Sunnis, Shias, and Maronite Christians each make up roughly 30% of Lebanon's population. Lebanon is currently without a president due to political deadlock.

  • That Lebanon should conduct a new census

    Infoslide

Lebanon runs under a confessional political system in which political power is divided between various religious groups. For instance, seats in the parliament are split 50/50 between Christians and Muslims. The president is required to be a Maronite Catholic, the prime minister a Sunni Muslim. This split is based on the 1932 census, which showed a slim majority of Maronite Catholics. More recent surveys have shown the population is closer to one-third Maronite, with Muslims a slim majority. Lebanon has not had a census since 1932.

    Infoslide

In early March, the new interim Syrian government, led by the Islamist group HTS, announced a deal with the Syrian Dmeocratic Forces (SDF), the Kurdish-led militia that controls the autonomous region of Rojava in Syria's northeast. The deal includes a commitment to integrate the SDF's military and political authorities into those commanded by the new government, including nominations of SDF officials to senior positions, merging SDF troops into the Syrian army, and the granting of territorial authority over Rojava to the government. Alongside these commitments for integration, the deal also includes a promise of regional political authority being given to the SDF in majority-Kurdish areas, and universal recognition of the Kurds as a distinct cultural and ethnic group. Turkey, a strong opponent of the SDF, was the main supporter of the new government during its rebellion against the Assad regime.
