  • That we prefer A-League sports to use a lottery draft rather than a standard draft

    Infoslide

Sports that use a lottery draft (e.g. NBA, National Hockey League) promote an element of chance into their player selection process; teams with poorer records may have a higher probability of early picks, but the draft order is ultimately determined by random draw. Sports that use a standard draft (e.g. NRL and NFL) allow teams to select players in strict reverse order of their performance (i.e. the weakest team picks first).

  • That we regret the creation of gender-specific championships and award categories in chess

    Infoslide

In professional chess, competitive categories are often divided into open tournaments (which are formally open to all genders) and female-specific categories, including Women’s Grandmaster (WGM) titles and women-only championships. However, the Elo rating thresholds for female titles are lower than those for corresponding open titles (e.g. WGM requires a 2300 rating, while the standard Grandmaster title requires 2500).

  • This house, as a college debate organization, would actively pursue varsity status within their university

    Infoslide

In many universities, varsity status refers to formal recognition as an official competitive team under the school's athletics or academic affairs office. This status often provides benefits such as funding, logistical support, access to facilities, and travel assistance. While funding is guaranteed, it is up to the university’s administrators and athletic offices how much funding is allocated to different sports teams without assurance of equal allocation. It also comes with institutional oversight, which may include requirements on academic standing, codes of conduct, fixed leadership structures, and limits on autonomy in decision-making or membership.

  • This House, as Game Freak, would prioritize the competitive balance of Pokémon VGC over casual player engagement when designing new Pokémon and mechanics for future generation games.

    Infoslide

Game Freak Inc. is a Japanese video game developer, best known as the primary developer of the Pokémon series. The games are widely enjoyed by casual players, whose main focus is adventuring through a fictional region, catching and raising Pokémon, and ultimately defeating in-game NPC opponents to become the regional Pokémon League champion. For most players, this experience is about enjoying the world, characters, and creatures—rather than competing against other real-life players. However, a small portion of the player base participates in the competitive "Pokémon VGC (Video Game Championships)" scene, which features structured, esports-style tournaments using standardized Double Battle rules. To accommodate both play styles, each new generation of the games introduces new Pokémon and new mechanics—such as Mega Evolution, Z-moves, Gigantamax, or Terastallization. These mechanics often aim to be visually exciting and fun for casual players, but not all of them are equally suited to competitive balance.
