It is a campaign with no clear leadership or goals, and multiple user-created blocklists have circulated. Some celebrities (Lizzo, Chris Olsen, Brittany Broski) have since posted videos encouraging supporters to donate to Palestinian families and aid organisations, although their late actions have been criticised as performative.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is an agreement reached in 2015 between Iran and the P5 + 1 group: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany. The agreement aimed to curb Iran's nuclear development program in exchange for the economic sanctions previously imposed by the P5 + 1 group. The deal also allowed P5 + 1 countries to conduct inspections to ensure Iran's compliance. In 2018, President Donald Trump broke the deal and started imposing economic sanctions on Iran, which resulted in Iran resuming its nuclear development program.

Lebanon has a confessional political system, in which seats in parliament and other important political positions are proportionately reserved for representatives from certain religious communities. The president must be a Maronite Christian; the speaker of the Parliament, a Shi'a Muslim; and the prime minister, a Sunni Muslim. Seats in parliament must be equally split between Christians and Muslims. Elections are held to fill these seats. Within each religious group there are multiple political parties, who often rule in coalitions. It is estimated that Sunnis, Shias, and Maronite Christians each make up roughly 30% of Lebanon's population. Lebanon is currently without a president due to political deadlock.
