    In 2016, the Colombian government and the guerrilla group FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) signed a peace agreement to end more than five decades of armed conflict. This agreement included, among other things, the demobilization of the guerrilla forces and their transition to legal political life. To that end, the new political party was guaranteed a minimum of 10 seats in the Colombian Congress (five in the Senate and five in the House of Representatives, corresponding to 5% and 3% of the total, respectively) for two legislative terms (eight years), regardless of the number of votes they received in the elections. The party advocates for social and economic causes that were part of its agenda during the years of armed conflict, such as land reform and social inclusion.

    Salvador Allende, a socialist who was democratically elected president of Chile, began to face strong opposition from economic elites following the implementation of reforms such as the nationalization of industries and agrarian reform. In addition to the inflationary crisis, intense political polarization divided society, while the United States actively supported destabilizing actions, such as trucker strikes that caused shortages and paralyzed the country. On September 11, 1973, the Chilean Armed Forces initiated a coup d'état. Salvador Allende decided to remain in the presidential palace and deliver a final address to the nation via radio. Despite having received offers of asylum, he declared that he would not resign and would face the coup head-on. Shortly afterwards, military forces began bombing La Moneda Palace with airplanes and tanks, and the then-president committed suicide. After his death, a brutal military dictatorship began in Chile, lasting until 1990.

Since assuming office in 2019, he has drastically reduced crime rates and gang violence by declaring a state of emergency, permitting tactics like arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture and violations of due process. With 80,000 imprisoned, the murder rate, has plummeted from 53 per 100,000 people in 2018 to 2.4 per 100,000 in 2023. Bukele appointed new judges to the constitutional court, which led to a constitutional change that allows him to serve a second term. In the latest 2024 general election, he won 84% of the votes.
