    Periyar was a social activist and politician who founded the Dravidian Self Respect Movement against oppression at the hands of caste-Brahmins. He popularised the demand for a sovereign Dravida Nadu (Land of the Dravidians/ South Indians) and later founded the DMK party in Tamil Nadu which forms the state government to this date. He also pioneered the anti Hindi protests in the 1930s and is widely accepted as the Father of Dravidian Politics. Periyar believed that caste equality can only be achieved with the annihilation of Hinduism, publicly burned images of Hindu gods like Rama and Krishna, and encouraged widespread religious conversion. He encouraging his followers to incite violence against upper castes. Despite championing Tamil identity, Periyar preferred the English language because he believed that Tamil is barbarian, and lacking modern verbals forms.
