  • We will ban artworks that incite violence, hatred, or harm specific communities.

    Infoslide

In the modern context, many works of art have sparked controversy for allegedly encouraging violent behavior, spreading hatred, or deeply offending specific community groups (based on religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, historical background, etc.). These works can appear in various forms such as music (rap promoting revenge and gun violence), paintings (cartoons insulting religions), films (glorifying terrorist acts), or poetry and stories (verbal violence targeting different communities). Examples include the photograph "Immersion" by photographer Andres Serrano, and the show "Family Guy." These works are believed to have wide-ranging consequences such as hatred between communities in society, discrimination, violence, polarization between political groups, etc. However, many artists argue that they are merely reflecting reality, expressing personal emotions, or using shocking or satirical elements to draw attention to social issues.

  • This house prefers Take the Money and Run to recreations of Haaning’s 2007 and 2010 works

    Infoslide

In 2021, the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg invited artist Jens Haaning to take part in _Work it Out_ , an exhibition about modern working life. The museum commissioned Haaning to recreate two of his works— _An Average Austrian Year Income_ (2007) and _An Average Danish Year Income_ (2010)—fronting him approximately DKK 532,549 (USD 84,000) in cash to display inside the frames. Instead of the agreed-upon reproductions, Haaning delivered the museum two blank canvases titled _Take the Money and Run_ (2021), accompanied by a single-line email explaining that the blank frames should replace the older works. In a subsequent settlement, Haaning returned the museum's money and agreed for the museum to display the blank frames, alongside a printed version of Haaning’s email, as the exhibition's new work.

  • This house believes that social movements should adopt symbolic politics rather than traditional activism

    Infoslide

In comparison to traditional activism which prioritises policy change and institutional reform, “symbolic politics” involves taking symbolic control over public spaces by disrupting the local order. This is done through the use of symbols, rituals and narratives and is less centred on conveying information. Rather, the activists' purpose is to influence public opinion by putting together an emotionally compelling performance. Examples include the choreography "A Rapist in Your Path" against sexual violence in Latin America, the transnational movement FEMEN who use nudity to protest and paint slogans on the activists' bodies, etc

  • This House prefers the values of 'zhen ji' to those of Western authorship.

    Infoslide

In Chinese cultural tradition, "zhen ji" is the idea of creation as a continuous and collaborative process. Works and products do not hold value for being original or unique, but for their quality and capacity for transformation. Successive contributions, such as poetic seals (xian zhan) or technical improvements, increase the value of the creation. Replicas (fuzhi) can be as valuable as the "original," and there is no condemnation of plagiarism. This also underpins the concept of "shanzhai" present in Chinese technological culture, such as "Nokir" cell phones or parodic films, which often surpass the originals. In contrast, the Western view tends to value originality and individual authorship as essential to the value of a creation, both in art and in inventions, technology, and cultural products.
