  • This house supports the use of cyber attacks instead of some conventional military actions in armed conflicts.

    Infoslide

For the purposes of this debate, cyber attacks are attacks carried out through cyberspace with the aim of causing damage, disruption, or gaining unauthorized access to computer systems, networks, or data. The way they operate often relies on the exploitation of vulnerabilities in commercially available software. The most well-known examples of the use of cyber attacks during conflicts between countries include: Stuxnet, responsible for causing significant damage to Iran's nuclear program between 2007-2010; and the Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in 2015.

  • This house prefers a world where everyone has a likeometer

    Infoslide

A "likeometer" is a hypothetical number above someone's head that indicates how much they platonically like you on a scale of 1-10. This number adjusts constantly, and is impossible to hide or manipulate. A likeometer only allows you to see your own scores, and not how much the person likes other individuals.

  • Assuming this technology exists, This house would allow people to buy and sell years of their life.

    Infoslide

Years of life can be extracted and traded among people. People do not know how many years of life they have left. Years of life are traded away from end of life by natural death. If a seller sells more years than they have left, the seller perishes and the buyer receives as many years as they had left

  • This House supports US Senate passing the PAFACA

    Infoslide

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) is a proposed bill in the United States Congress. The bill would make it illegal to distribute, maintain, or update (or enable the distribution, maintenance, or updating of) social media applications designated as being controlled by United States "foreign adversaries", unless exempted under a qualified divestiture as determined by the president of the United States. The bill explicitly targets Chinese internet technology company ByteDance and its video platform TikTok, and also provides for other large social media applications to be targeted under the bill if they are deemed by the U.S. president to pose a threat to national security. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives on March 13, 2024; and if passed through the Senate, forces ByteDance to sell TikTok, or have the platform banned altogether.

  • This house, as the chemist, would take the chemical weapons job

    Infoslide

In 1973, philosopher Bernard Williams presents the following example. Kelly is an unemployed chemist who is offered a job developing a new category of chemical weapons (seemingly not prohibited by treaty). Kelly has always been strongly opposed to weapons of mass destruction, but jobs are scarce and Kelly has a family to provide for. Kelly’s spouse makes a very modest salary as a preschool teacher, and has no qualms about Kelly working on these new weapons. If Kelly does not take the job, they are told that someone else without any reservations about the weapons research will take the job and will likely move the development ahead more quickly.

  • This house supports the use of “eye in the sky” policing in urban areas with high crime rates

    Infoslide

“Eye in the Sky” surveillance involves constantly flying inaudible drones over large areas (say, 30 square miles). The drones take pictures of the entire area constantly. Images are stored electronically such that police can essentially turn back the clock at the location of a crime and look at where people came from or went to, potentially providing valuable clues toward solving these crimes. The image resolution does not allow for identifying individuals or reading license plates.
