  • This house regrets the legacy of Nelson Mandela

    Infoslide

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and politician from South Africa who became the first black president of the country after being imprisoned for 27 years. He was elected in the country's first fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by fostering racial reconciliation through forgiveness and unity. He served as the president of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997, Mandela is deeply connected to the the party's platform and ANC is still in power today. During this tenure he was pivotal in de-escalating tensions between the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the ANC. After 29 years of democracy South Africa is still one of the most unequal countries in the world, with race playing a determining factor in a society where 10% of the population owns more than 80% of the wealth. Cornerstone issues such as land expropriation are still as hotly contested in post-apartheid South Africa as in 1994. 2023 will mark 10 years since Mandela's passing.
