  • That we would prefer developing the technology to terraform other planets in our solar system over searching for habitable exoplanets

    Infoslide

Terraforming is an as yet unproven scientific concept that tries to change the environment of other planets to make them more like Earth. This involves changing the planet's atmosphere, temperature, and surface to make it habitable. For example, on Mars, terraforming would involve warming the planet up and adding oxygen to its atmosphere, so humans could breathe without space suits. An Exoplanet is a planet outside our solar system.

  • This house supports the move to restart or build new nuclear power plants in Japan.

    Infoslide

Nuclear energy has been a national strategic priority for Japan since 1973. Japan's reactors provided some 30% of the country's electricity before the Fukushima accident in 2011. The Fukushima accident was a nuclear disaster that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. It was triggered by a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which caused widespread destruction along the northeastern coast of Japan. Radioactive particles were carried by wind and rain leading to widespread radioactive contamination of land, air, and water in the surrounding areas. The disaster also prompted the evacuation of over 150,000 people from the area surrounding the power plant, creating a large exclusion zone. The cleanup and decommissioning process is estimated to take several decades to complete. Since then, the government has reduced the role of nuclear power. In early 2023, Japan's Cabinet approved plans to extend the lifespans of nuclear reactors beyond 60 years and build new units to replace those that are decommissioned, reversing policies put in place after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.
