Examples include Burundi and Ethiopia. By comparison, ethnic non-recognition involves removing public references to ethnicity, including from identity documents, textbooks and public life. This approach was taken in Rwanda, where ethnicity can only be discussed during an annual remembrance period for the victims of genocide.
