  • This house Laments the Fall of Bashar al-Assad

    Infoslide

IS 1: Bashar al-Assad was Syria’s dictator from 2000 to 2024, succeeding his father, who had ruled since 1971. Both governed with the support of different ethnic/religious minority groups within the country and followed a secular state model. During the Arab Spring, his brutal repression led to the Syrian civil war, marked by massacres, the use of chemical weapons, and a humanitarian crisis. IS 2: In December 2024, the HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) group, previously linked to al-Qaeda, overthrew Assad, who fled to Russia. HTS, now in power, promised to open Syria to the world and adopt modern policies, such as easing restrictions on access to dollars and lowering tariffs on products from the West. However, the group maintains a history of Islamic fundamentalism. In January, when meeting international representatives, one of the new government’s ministers did not greet Germany’s foreign minister because she is a woman. Syria’s Ministry of Education made changes to the curriculum for children aged 6 to 18, which include changing the phrases “path of goodness” to “Islamic path” and “those who are condemned and have strayed from the path” to “Jews and Christians.”

Many Muslims also complete the pilgrimage at other times should they wish; this is called the 'Umrah.' Currently, the jurisdiction of the Ka'bah (including routes to the Ka'bah) belongs to Saudi Arabia.

  • This house believes that the West should militarily intervene in Yemen

    Infoslide

The fighting between Houthi rebels and the Saudi coalition that supports Yemen's internationally recognized government has mostly calmed, but the Houthis have frequently targeted ships traversing the Red Sea in reaction to Israel's conflict in Palestine. Dialogue between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, combined with Iranian-Saudi reconciliation, has raised hopes for a diplomatic settlement. However, negotiations have made little progress and have been marred by violence. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation has not improved; 21.6 million people, including 11 million children, require assistance, and more than 4.5 million are displaced. Currently Yemen is a heavily divided state. Houthis currently control the capital Sanaa and all of former North Yemen except for eastern Marib Governorate. On the other hand, the Southern Transitional Council holds the southern part of Yemen and most of the east. Complicating this, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) surged more attacks in recent years and now holds smaller territories in the eastern region, exacerbated by sporadic attacks from the terrorist group ISIS.
