    The ongoing Venezuela-Guyana territorial dispute concerns the Essequibo region, an area that makes up two-thirds of Guyana. Venezuela has long claimed this region, citing historical treaties and colonial-era maps. In 1899, an international tribunal ruled to assign the Essequibo to Guyana. However, in 1962, Venezuela rejected this ruling, claiming the decision was invalid due to alleged collusion. The case remains under the International Court of Justice (ICJ) review. Venezuela, led by President Nicolas Maduro, has since increased its rhetoric and conducted a 2023 referendum, in which Venezuelans overwhelmingly supported annexing the Essequibo region. Following the referendum, Venezuela escalated its activities by issuing new maps depicting the Essequibo as part of its territory, mobilizing troops near the border, and granting oil exploration licenses in the disputed area, moves widely condemned by the international community and viewed as attempts to assert de facto control over the region.

    The Chagos Islands are a group of more than 60 islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean about 500 kilometres south of The Maldives. When Britain granted Mauritius independence in 1965, it retained the Chagos Islands for itself as the British Indian Ocean Territory. The native population of the Islands were expelled and an American military base was constructed on the largest island Diego Garcia. Keir Starmer has promised to return the islands to Mauritius.

Leaders like Aimé Césaire and Steve Biko in post-apartheid South Africa's emphasised on reconciliation and the notion of a "Rainbow Nation" rooted in universal human rights and dignity. In India, Rabindranath Tagore condemned colonial exploitation but he did not dwell on its evils as the sole basis for identity formation in postcolonial societies. In Gitanjali, he articulates themes of spiritual enlightenment, love, and the unity of existence. The poems emphasize the interconnectedness of humanity and the divine, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.
