  • For crimes against minority individuals or groups (e.g. police brutality assault on trans individuals etc.) this house would lower the burden of proof from beyond reasonable doubt to on the balance of probabilities

    Infoslide

The 'balance of probabilities' is met when evidence exists to prove that the suspect is more likely than not to have committed the crime. A finding of probable cause does not require whether there is evidence to secure a conviction or whether there is evidence that could acquit the suspect. The standard of 'beyond reasonable doubt' is met when evidence exists to produce moral certainty that the accused committed the crime. Alternatively if no such evidence exists there would be a 'reasonable doubt' that the accused did the crime thus freeing them from the charge.

  • Assuming a tradeoff this house believes that advocates of racial minorities should prioritize celebration and recognition of their identities using their own platforms in the entertainment industry rather than trying to get more integration in mainstream entertainment.

    Infoslide

Racial inequality in the entertainment industry is currently a large issue that is being targeted by racial minorities. One approach by advocates of racial minorities is to celebrate and recognize racial identity on their own platforms by creating movies telling the lived experiences of minorities directed by directors who are minorities (ex. Jordan Peele) or focusing more attention to the events such as the Black Entertainment Television Awards (BET Awards). On the other hand some advocates believe it is better to increase diversity through integration and advocacy into mainstream media such as advocating for the Grammys/Oscars to be less racist or actors trying to star in major blockbusters like Disney projects.

  • This house would make it mandatory for national sporting teams should use diversity roster quotas to reflect the diversity of the national population.

    Infoslide

A roster quota is a requirement that sports teams have players that are representative of the country they represent. For example a roster quota based on nationality would require that a team is made up of players that reflects the racial diversity of that country. To be specific if a US sports team has a roster of 20 players and about 15% of the American population is African-American then A MINIMUM of 3 out of the 20 players (15%) must be African-American. Roster quotas can also be done for other forms of identity such as LGBTQ+ identity ethnicity etc.

  • This house believes that the Black Lives Matter movement should campaign for abolishing rather than defunding the police

    Infoslide

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement is a social and political movement which protests institutional racism with a particular focus upon protesting racially motivated violence against African Americans by the police. In 2020 parts of the BLM movement began campaigning for the defunding of police. If successful defunding the police would mean that law enforcement budgets would be dramatically cut with fewer police officers. Ideally these budgets would be reallocated into public institutions. Other parts of the BLM movement believe that the police should be abolished altogether. If successful abolishing the police would mean that current law enforcement systems would be replaced entirely by alternatives to policing. These alternatives to policing may include a greater focus upon preventative measures through public health initiatives and community-based organisations and different approaches to conflict management through for example community patrols or ‘peace officers’ specialist crisis response teams or community mediation. The BLM campaign for defunding the police has had moderate success with a number of American cities decreasing funding to law enforcement agencies such as in New York Los Angeles and Minneapolis.
