  • This house Laments the Fall of Bashar al-Assad

    Infoslide

IS 1: Bashar al-Assad was Syria’s dictator from 2000 to 2024, succeeding his father, who had ruled since 1971. Both governed with the support of different ethnic/religious minority groups within the country and followed a secular state model. During the Arab Spring, his brutal repression led to the Syrian civil war, marked by massacres, the use of chemical weapons, and a humanitarian crisis. IS 2: In December 2024, the HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) group, previously linked to al-Qaeda, overthrew Assad, who fled to Russia. HTS, now in power, promised to open Syria to the world and adopt modern policies, such as easing restrictions on access to dollars and lowering tariffs on products from the West. However, the group maintains a history of Islamic fundamentalism. In January, when meeting international representatives, one of the new government’s ministers did not greet Germany’s foreign minister because she is a woman. Syria’s Ministry of Education made changes to the curriculum for children aged 6 to 18, which include changing the phrases “path of goodness” to “Islamic path” and “those who are condemned and have strayed from the path” to “Jews and Christians.”

  • This house prefers the ICC over an ad-hoc regional tribunal for prosecuting core international crimes

    Infoslide

It has its own rules of procedure and evidence. Ad-hoc regional tribunals (eg.International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), etc) are international courts established to address specific conflicts and regions, usually by the UN Security Council. They may create their own procedural rules, which need to be based on internaional principles but may be adapted to their unique contexts as needed. They are dissolved once they complete their mandates, which includes finalizing all cases and appeals. Their jurisdiction is limited to particular regions and timeframe through treaties.
