The city of Mosul, which is predominantly Sunni, is currently the de facto capital of the Islamic State in Iraq. There is currently a joint US-backed offensive against Mosul on three fronts. These are fought by the Kurdish Peshmerga, the Iraqi Armed Forces and the People’s Mobilization Forces (PMF). The PMF is a Shia militia which is backed by Iran and Hezbollah. It controls significant strategic positions and villages outside of Mosul. Turkey and the Iraqi government have asked the PMF to not enter Mosul.
