  • This house regrets the decline of Black Liberation Theology in African American activism

    Infoslide

James Cone argues that “the task of black theology is to analyze the nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the light of oppressed blacks so they will see the gospel as inseparable from their humiliated condition, and as bestowing on them the necessary power to break the chains of oppression.” Throughout the Black Freedom Struggle, African American activists have mobilized Black theology to inspire forms of political action, shape the institutional design of social movements, generate theories of political organizing, deploy political rhetoric, and orient critiques of American society. Black theology has historically animated various movements, including (most famously) the Abolitionist Movement and the Civil Rights Movement led by stalwarts like Pauli Murray, Maria Stewart, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X. As Taylor Branch writes, The civil rights movement fused the political promise of equal votes with the spiritual doctrine of equal souls"."

  • That we support social movements adopting reclamation as a means of empowerment.

  • That, in campaigning for reparations, BLM should centre the Bittker Approach as opposed to the Ogletree Approach.

    Infoslide

The Bittker Approach and the Ogletree Approach are two different strategies in campaigning for reparations for Black Americans. The Bittker approach argues for the creation of a program which gives direct economic capital to Black Americans. The Ogletree Approach argues for the creation of a program of job training and public works that takes racial justice as its mission but includes the poor of all races.

  • That we oppose the Relatability Turn

    Infoslide

The Relatability Turn is a recent shift in the study and production of literature which encourages readers to relate to specific experiences of hardship by marketing them as transcendent of their context, as opposed to analysing them as unique and particular. Examples include, reading stories of queer oppression as universally applicable stories about the triumph of love, or stories of racial oppression as in some sense relatable to those who have experienced other forms of isolation.

  • That, as an influential individual within a community of racial minority backgrounds, we would emphasize the law’s liberatory potential as opposed to its oppressive potential

    Infoslide

For the purposes of this debate, emphasising the law's liberatory potential might highlight minorities' ability to acquire and use legal expertise for their protection and advancement. The law's oppressive potential might highlight the biased and inaccessible nature of the law.

  • This House Would Prefer the Killmonger plot to the Shuri plot

    Infoslide

There are two potential plots for the next Black Panther movie, noting Chadwick Boseman’s recent passing. The first is where Erik Killmonger (played by Michael B Jordan) is brought back to life (in the comics he is resurrected by the Mandarin – but this could happen in a number of ways), has some contrition for previous events (whilst still feeling strongly about supporting disenfranchised black people across the world), and ascends as Ruler of Wakanda, taking up the Black Panther mantle. The second is where Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) ascends and takes up the Black Panther mantle. In both plots, T'Challa would pass away off-screen.

  • This House as Sir Gawain would kill the dragon

    Infoslide

It is the age after King Arthur’s reign. There is a magical dragon up in the mountains whose breath has created a mist over Arthur’s kingdom under which people have an extremely thin grip on their long-term memories. When separated for long periods, parents forget their children, lover forgets lover. Village councils adjudicate on a problem and then have no recollection it ever happened. A generation ago, Arthur and his knights waged a successful war to protect Britons against the Saxons and carved out a great kingdom. In order to stop future generations of Saxons from continuing the cycle of violence, the Knights slaughtered some entire villages and lineages, not sparing children and babies. Arthur, recognizing that this would not end the cycle of violence but worsen it, asked Merlin to enchant the dragon and so memories of this genocide were lost and the land knows peace. The Britons are safe in Arthur’s kingdom and live in harmony alongside a minority of Saxons in Briton and Saxon villages alike. Neighboring Saxon kingdoms look at the Saxon minorities as the best way to wage war against Arthur’s kingdom and expand. Sir Gawain, knight and nephew of Arthur, the last surviving member of the old King's faithful, walks the crypts over the skulls of Saxon babies and questions if they were in the right. Gawain is now an elderly yet formidable as ever warrior who could dispose of the dragon swiftly. Yet, so far, he has chosen not to, fearing the violence that would descend upon the land if the Saxons remember

  • This House believes that the emphasis on wokeness in today's political discourse brings more harm than good

    Infoslide

Wokeness, originating as a slang used by Black activists, is generally accepted as the idea that you’ve woken up to racial and social injustices around you, seen how oppression has been institutionalized and now are unable to un-see this truth. Essentially, once you’re woke, you can’t fall asleep. In today's discourse, the practice of wokeness is often emphasized in societal discourses, including but not limited to the expansive use of gender pronouns, pushing back against privilege of dominant groups (the white, the men, the cis, etc.), cancel culture, among others. Many associate wokeness with being extremely left-wing (i.e. for maximum egalitarianism and opposing social hierarchy) in the political spectrum.
