    In Midland, there is no such thing as material pain and suffering. There is no starvation, all injuries are tended to, and efficiency is maximized. In exchange, conformity is extremely enforced. People are prohibited from acknowledging differences in society as well as forming any personal attachments to other people, all aesthetic things without practical value (e.g. music, snow) are banned, and any collective memory of rebellion against Midland is lost. Anyone who chooses to rebel or acknowledge any differences among people is severely punished, and repeat offenders are exiled and forgotten by society.
