  • In constituency electoral systems, This house would require the electoral representatives of a select number of constituencies to be laypeople

    Infoslide

    (i) Under a constituency electoral system, the composition of parliament following a national election depends on the outcome across voting areas (constituencies). Each constituency will have a number of candidates running for office, who may be members of political parties or independent (i.e. not affiliated with any political party). The candidate with the highest number of votes enters office as the electoral representative of that constituency. Examples of countries following the constituency electoral system are the United Kingdom, India, and Malaysia. (ii) For the purposes of the debate, a layperson is defined as an individual with no prior experience in politics (e.g. they have never held office, they have never worked in government).

  • This house prefers a world in which individuals gain access to the Dreamscape for one month if they are handed a Coke with their name on it.

    Infoslide

'Share a Coke' has been a multi-national marketing campaign by Coca-Cola since 2011. It replaces the traditional Coke logo from one side of the bottle with the phrase "Share a Coke with" followed by a person's name. For the purposes of this debate, individuals cannot order these Coke bottles online; the bottles can only be found by accident during an unrelated shopping trip. (2/2) The Dreamscape is a finicky new invention that has the capacity to bring any and all sentient beings from an individual’s dreams into reality. Individuals do not get to choose which beings from their dreams are manifested — they only get to choose to use the machine. These beings only survive as long as the individual has access to the Dreamscape. Once created, these beings retain their physical characteristics & supernatural powers, should they possess any. For example, if someone dreams of a strong giant, this giant will retain its size and strength upon entering reality. Most of the time, these beings will pursue socially good objectives, albeit imperfectly — e.g., a giant may be unnecessarily destructive; a shaman may accidentally turn water into wine, etc. Some of the time, these beings will pursue socially bad objectives.

  • This house believes that civil action groups should prioritize petitioning the Supreme Court as opposed to pursuing appeals from lower-court cases

    Infoslide

In most legal systems, a petition and an appeal are distinct processes for bringing a case before the supreme court. An appeal is a continuation of an existing case, where a higher court reviews the legal correctness of a regional court's decision. A petition, in contrast, is a formal request by a certain entity (e.g., civil action groups, corporations, government entities, individuals) for the Supreme Court to choose to hear a new case. While appeal trials are guaranteed to any party who demonstrates credible doubt in the lower court's decision, petitions are not guaranteed to any party; the Supreme Court chooses which petitions to hear.

  • This house regrets the decline of Black Liberation Theology in African American activism

    Infoslide

James Cone argues that “the task of black theology is to analyze the nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the light of oppressed blacks so they will see the gospel as inseparable from their humiliated condition, and as bestowing on them the necessary power to break the chains of oppression.” Throughout the Black Freedom Struggle, African American activists have mobilized Black theology to inspire forms of political action, shape the institutional design of social movements, generate theories of political organizing, deploy political rhetoric, and orient critiques of American society. Black theology has historically animated various movements, including (most famously) the Abolitionist Movement and the Civil Rights Movement led by stalwarts like Pauli Murray, Maria Stewart, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X. As Taylor Branch writes, The civil rights movement fused the political promise of equal votes with the spiritual doctrine of equal souls.
