  • This house believes that Mamdani's victory has done more harm than good to the Democratic Party.

    Infoslide

In the 2025 Democratic primary for the New York City mayoral election, Zohran Mamdani achieved a surprise victory over fellow Democrat candidate Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo had run for the election despite multiple previous allegations of sexual harrassment. Mamdani gained popularity largely off the basis of his democratically socialist policies, such as the implementation of universal childcare, city-run grocery stores, and freezing rent for rent-stabilised tenants. However, his policy stances have also been mired in controversy, with Trump threatening to arrest him should he fail to cooperate with federal immigration agencies.

  • This house, as a struggling first-generation immigrant in a developed state who can no longer care for their toddler, would leave the child in institutional care rather than kinship care

    Infoslide

Children who can no longer be cared for by their parents may be looked after by institutional child care systems. This includes the foster care system, where children are assigned to random families who are subsidized and vetted by the state, and state-run institutional “homes” and orphanages staffed by childcare and welfare workers. Kinship care is when children and youth live with relatives or fictive kin (those known and trusted by the family) during times of crisis. Kinship care is often an informal set-up, and the government is largely uninvolved.

  • This house supports open borders

    Infoslide

For this debate, “open borders” means eliminating all routine immigration barriers, including visas, work-permit quotas, skill or income tests, family caps, or entry fees that exclude people solely because they are non-citizens. Border officials may still conduct customs inspections, enforce public-health measures (e.g., quarantine or vaccination proof), and run narrowly targeted security checks on individuals listed as violent threats. Otherwise, anyone may freely enter, reside, work, and reunite with family in any country.

  • The council supports the tightening of border controls by Schengen Area member states.

    Infoslide

The Schengen Borders Code (SBC) allows Member States to temporarily reintroduce border controls at internal borders in the event of a serious threat to public policy or internal security. The reintroduction of border controls at internal borders should be applied in exceptional situations with due regard to the principle of proportionality: the level of tightening should be proportional to the threat faced. Recently, Germany tightened its border controls, including against fellow residents of the Schengen Area, in the eastern and southern parts.

  • This house believes that the coalition with the SDP will do more harm than good to Chancellor Merz's administration

    Infoslide

Friedrich Merz, the leader of the center-right alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), is the new Chancellor of Germany after winning the election in February 2025. The CDU/CSU is currently under a coalition government with the center-left Social Democratic Party (SDP), working on increasing military spending, improving the economy, and imposing stricter immigration policies. This is the 5th time that the CDU/CSU and SDP have worked together in a coalition government. The SDP acquired the third highest number of votes in the February election, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) got the second highest. Merz has publicly expressed his unwillingness to form a coalition with the far-right AfD due to its extreme nature, although some of the CDU/CSU and AfD's interests align such as in immigration policy. Recently, there has been a rise in far-right sentiment in Germany.
