  • This house believes that parents should teach daughters to assume men are "guilty until proven innocent".

    Infoslide

For the purposes of the debate, assuming a man is "guilty until proven innocent" means to assume he is ill-intentioned until proven otherwise. Believing a man is "guilty until proven innocent" may imply, among other things, believing he is untrustworthy, overwhelmingly driven by lust, or harbours a tendency to look down upon women.

  • This House Regrets the decline of children's media containing dark, frightening themes

    Infoslide

Until recently, popular entertainment intended for children—such as fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and movies—often contained dark, frightening themes alongside positive, optimistic ones. For example, in the original version of _The Little Mermaid_ , by Hans Christian Andersen, the mermaid dies at the end of the story. In Disney's 1942 film _Bambi_ , Bambi's mother is shot dead, Bambi himself is shot (though he survives), and Bambi's friend, Faline, narrowly escapes being torn to pieces by a pack of wild dogs.

  • This house, as the parent, would plug their child into the experience machine

    Infoslide

You are a low-income worker in a developed country. Your partner has died giving birth to your first child, who is born with a chronic but non-life- threatening disease. Doctors offer you the option of the “Experience Machine,” which flawlessly simulates a slightly above-average Canadian life for whoever is plugged in. It can only be used within 24 hours of birth; once inside, the person cannot return without dying. The machine is experimental but extremely safe, and researchers are a single human trial away from being able to safely simulate any experience for any age. So far, finding subjects has been extremely difficult.

  • This house prefers the Grimm Brothers' method of storytelling over Disney's method of storytelling when it comes to producing children's media

    Infoslide

The Disney method is a storytelling style that is sanitised, optimistic and visually appealing, often involving musical elements and comic relief. It emphasises hope, perseverance and friendship, and typically ends happily. The Grimm Brothers' method depicts stories as darker, moralistic and often violent tales with clear consequences. It emphasises realism, fear, and caution. These stories usually involve suffering as a path to learning and tend to lack sanitised happy endings

  • This house prefers the current model over the revamp

    Infoslide

The current Gifted Education Programme (GEP) system aims to identify intellectually gifted students through a two-stage exercise in Primary 3. Those selected are invited to join one of the nine designated primary schools offering the programme. Starting from the 2024 Primary 1 cohort, every primary school will now be equipped with resources to identify their own high-ability students from Primary 4 to 6 and run their own school-based programmes to nurture these students in their area of strengths and interests, instead of the current centralised programme. The revamp will also take into account recommendations from teachers, instead of the current system where it is solely assessment- based. The revamp is expected to increase the number of students admitted into GEP to about 10% of each cohort, while it was previously from around 1% in the current system.
