  • This House believes that Vietnam should actively support the GSI

    Infoslide

The Global Security Initiative (GSI) is an initiative proposed by China, which provides a framework of principles for global affairs and diplomacy that could make the world a safer place. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says that GSI "improves and goes beyond the Western theory of geopolitical security" - and is a response to the current world order established by the West after World War II (through the United Nations, NATO, etc.). Officially, it is meant to "uphold the principle of indivisible security, build a balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture, and oppose the building of national security on the basis of insecurity in other countries." GSI has received positive feedback and expression of interest from nations, for instance Uruguay, Solomon Islands and Tajikistan.

  • This House believes that national history curriculums should prioritise teaching global history as opposed to local history

    Infoslide

Global history examines the interconnectedness of human societies and their interactions across the world over time. Even when a global historian focuses their historical research on a specific location, they are interested in examining how global forces shaped human lives in those areas. For example, a global historian of Malaysia may study how British imperialism affected the position of the Malay sultanates. Comparatively, local history refers to the study of the history of a particular place or community, often focusing on the people, events, and institutions that have shaped that community. For example, a local historian of Malaya may study the development of a local Malayan cinema.

  • This house believes that 21st century western liberal democracy will fail to defeat the challenges of populism.

    Infoslide

Western liberal democracy characterizes the status quo of many countries and systems. It is a political system that is characterized by a pursuit of free and fair elections, internationalism, moderate politics, globalization, capitalism, free markets, and a separation of powers among different branches of government. This system emphasizes the importance of individual liberty, and seeks to prevent the concentration of power in the hands of a single person or group. Most importantly, it is characterized by a respect for, and a preservation of the status quo and its institutions. Populism is a political ideology that appeals to the concerns and interests of ordinary people, often at the expense of the elite or establishment. Populist leaders often claim to represent the voice of the people against the corrupt and out-of-touch elite, and may use emotional appeals and rhetoric to rally support for their cause. Populism has both right wing and left wing manifestations.
