Three deputy ministers made disparaging comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his post on 'X' after his visit to Lakshadweep, suggesting that it was an effort to promote the Union Territory as a competing tourist destination to the Maldives The comments made by the ministers sparked criticism from India. Subsequently, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu made an official visit to China where both countries signed several new developmental agreements including ones on climate, agriculture and infrastructure and tourism. Further, Maldives has also ordered India to withdraw its troops from Maldives by March 2024.
