Quantified indulgences refer to quantifying what is being given (i.e. money, alms, prayers, pilgrimages), and quantifying the remission from the punishment of sin (days or years shaved off of purgatory). By the late Middle Ages, indulgences were mostly used to support public works like hospitals, churches, and schools until financial indulgences were banned under pressure from the Protestant Reformation. Reforms in the 20th century largely abolished quantified indulgences.

Notably, the Court ruled in 2020 that a Montana law prohibiting scholarships to religious schools violated the Free Exercise Clause, and in 2022, it deemed Maine's refusal to provide public funding to religious schools unconstitutional.
