    Since 2020, there has been a resurgence of military coups d'etats and unconstitutional changes in government across Africa. The African Union (AU) has come under criticism for its "passive" reaction to these events, i.e., diplomatic urges to return to constitutional/democratic rule and suspension of membership from the union. On the other hand, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been lauded for its more aggressive approach in response to West African coup incidents, i.e., sanctions and even attempts at direct military intervention.

    In 2021, Myanmar’s ruling party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), was deposed by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's military, which then vested power in a military junta. Myanmar’s northern regions, near the border with China, have since become a major foothold for the illegal drugs trade and cybercrime. Northern Myanmar is currently contested between the military government and multiple ethnic armed organisations. China’s security services have links to the Three Brotherhood Alliance, a coalition of some of the militias in the area. In October 2023, the TBA launched a major offensive against the army, and seized over 200 army bases and four border crossings in the area that are vital for trade with China.

    Somaliland is a de-facto self-governing territory, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991. The territory has not gained official recognition from any member states of the UN or any other international bodies. In January 2024, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland giving Ethiopia access to the Red sea in exchange for official recognition of Somaliland by Ethiopia. The deal has sparked tensions between Ethiopia and its neighbours, Somalia and Egypt signed a military alliance in response to the move and the deal has been condemned by the African Union.

    During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Czechoslovak resistance operatives carried out an assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most prominent and curel Nazi leaders. At the time, Heydrich served as the governor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The operation, known as ‘Operation Anthropoid,’ targeted Heydrich and led to his death. In response, the SS troops undertook a series of brutal reprisals, which included the destruction of villages and the killing of civilians.

    Recently, the Ukrainian Government under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy launched an offensive in the Kursk region in Russia, which has been broadly considered as one of the biggest counter offensives that Ukraine has launched since the start of the war. Zelensky claims to have control over the territory, but Russia has disputed the claims on the extent of the incursion The Biden Administration is currently providing massive amounts of military to Zelensky’s regime, which has received significant political backlash back in the US.

    During the India-Pakistan partition in 1947, princely states were given the choice to join either India, Pakistan or remain independent. Kashmir, ruled by a Hindu King but with a Muslim majority population, was heavily contested by both countries. Initially choosing to remain independent, Kashmir was attacked by Pakistan-based militias. The King agreed to cede to India in exchange for military assistance. The Pakistani Army entered Kashmir in response to Indian presence, which led to a year long conflict. The Indian army secured the central regions of Kashmir owing to its greater military strength while Pakistan secured the northern and western regions. Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru took the Kashmir issue to the UN for mediation, and a ceasefire was announced with a temporary Line of Control. The dispute remains unresolved as of today. With the benefit of hindsight, THBT it would have been in India's interest for Nehru to have never approached the United Nations for mediation.

    The New START is a nuclear arms reduction treaty signed in 2010 between the United States (US) and the Russian Federation. In 2023, Russia, suspended its participation in New START, but did not withdraw from the treaty, clarifying their intention to abide by the numerical limitations of specified in the treaty. In 2024, the US announced that they would increase their nuclear arsenal citing deterrence of adversaries. This is a reversal from their previous stance of nuclear disarmament.
