Following the passage of the Hong Kong Security Law on 30 June 2020 the British government criticized the CCP's breach of Hong Kong's sovereignty. The law criminalizes secession (breaking away from the country) subversion (undermining the power or authority of the central government) terrorism (using violence or intimidation against people) and collusion with external foreign forces with a maximum sentence of life in prison. As a response the British government offered full citizenship to all Hongkongers qualified as Overseas British Nationals. this applies to the roughly 3 million residents who were citizens during British Rule (which ended in 1997) as well as their descendants.
