  • This house believes that Parks Canada should pursue pro-development policies/norms instead of preservationist policies/norms in the National Parks

    Infoslide

INFOSLIDE 1: As an example, authorities in the French & Swiss Alps largely follow pro-development policies/norms which encourage comparatively widespread human enjoyment of parks. Infrastructure is made to increase, rather than restrict the number of visitors to the backcountry (e.g. numerous backcountry huts that allow access to all sorts of mountainous terrain are common, development of tourist attractions like Gondolas and ski resorts is substantially increased, investment is made into increasing public transport/access, and building limitations in towns are not as stringent as in Canada). Trails are highly developed and numerous, and access to the backcountry is made easy. INFOSLIDE 2: In Canada, preservationist policies/norms limit development. Projects to build resorts/lifts must undergo highly restrictive review processes, development in towns is more strictly limited (e.g. commercial/residential buildings in Banff have highly restrictive use-density regulations), and huts and trails making access to the backcountry viable are comparatively limited by policy and norms alike.

  • This house believes that post-conflict societies should emphasize the narrative of the "banality of evil" when interpreting atrocities committed in the past

    Infoslide

The concept of ‘banality of evil’ claims that most perpetrators of great acts of evil are ordinary people, with no motive other than promoting their own advancement in society. Under this concept, perpetrators do not have to be "radically evil" and can be responsible for atrocities through their common acts or omissions.

  • This House believes that national history curriculums should prioritise teaching global history as opposed to local history

    Infoslide

Global history examines the interconnectedness of human societies and their interactions across the world over time. Even when a global historian focuses their historical research on a specific location, they are interested in examining how global forces shaped human lives in those areas. For example, a global historian of Malaysia may study how British imperialism affected the position of the Malay sultanates. Comparatively, local history refers to the study of the history of a particular place or community, often focusing on the people, events, and institutions that have shaped that community. For example, a local historian of Malaya may study the development of a local Malayan cinema.
