  • This House, as an average college-going individual in a western liberal democracy, Hopes to get involved with a manic pixie dream girl/guy

    Infoslide

For the purposes of this debate, a Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG) is a quirky, free-spirited, and easily-attached female character who either lacks personal depth or willingly sets aside her ambitions for the male protagonist. Her primary role in a story is to "fix" the brooding male protagonist and push him toward experiences he wouldn't normally pursue. MPDGs often enter one's life like a hurricane—bringing excitement, spontaneity, and emotional upheaval—but their presence is never guaranteed to last. If they stay, relationships tend to become co-dependent; if they leave, they do so just as suddenly, often leaving behind unresolved emotions and personal upheaval, but also potentially a brand new perspective on life and self-identity. For example, Natasha (Kalki Koechlin) in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara leaves her successful career without prompting and follows Kabir (Abhay Deol) on his bachelor trip to keep an eye on him and ensure he doesn't stray. Another example is Summer (Zooey Deschanel) in 500 Days of Summer, who brings spontaneity and joy into Tom’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) life, pushing him out of his comfort zone, but ultimately leaves just as abruptly, forcing him to confront personal growth on his own.

  • This house regrets the growing association between the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and Saudi Arabia

    Infoslide

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) governs professional women’s tennis but has significantly less financial backing than the men’s tennis association, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). In 2024, the WTA partnered with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), granting it naming rights for select tournaments, sponsorship of tour rankings, and the risk to host the WTA finals, the most prestigious tournament of the WTA Tour, in Saudi Arabia for 3 years. While countries like the Czech Republic and Mexico also bidded to host, their financial offers were less competitive.

  • This House Believes That women peace movements should embrace tactics which weaponise traditional gender norms instead of traditional peace tactics

    Infoslide

Some women's peace movements employ traditional activist tactics such as protests and lobbying. They seek to deconstruct the structures of patriarchy while fighting for peace, draw connections between militarism and patriarchy in their advocacy, and ensure peace agreements address gender concerns. Other women's peace movements employ alternative tactics that weaponise traditional gender norms, including organising sex strikes to influence male partners in conflicts, invoking their status as mothers to demand a voice in peace discussions, and forming physical barriers using female bodies that cultural norms protect.

    Infoslide

Reverse sexism is the practice of reversing sexist behaviours that typically apply to one gender so that they are instead applied to another (e.g. Barbieland’s matriarchy in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Anne Hathaway playing an older woman in a romance with a much younger man in The Idea of You, and Sandra Oh’s on-screen husband in Killing Eve who plays a gender-inverted "nagging husband" that no one listens to and whom Eve treats with contempt).
