  • This house believes that social movements should adopt symbolic politics rather than traditional activism

    Infoslide

In comparison to traditional activism which prioritises policy change and institutional reform, “symbolic politics” involves taking symbolic control over public spaces by disrupting the local order. This is done through the use of symbols, rituals and narratives and is less centred on conveying information. Rather, the activists' purpose is to influence public opinion by putting together an emotionally compelling performance. Examples include the choreography "A Rapist in Your Path" against sexual violence in Latin America, the transnational movement FEMEN who use nudity to protest and paint slogans on the activists' bodies, etc

  • That, as the ALP, we prefer the Prime Minister's Pick system to the Caucus Discretion system

    Infoslide

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) Caucus refers to all elected Federal Labor politicians. Under the Caucus Discretion System (the status quo), the ALP cabinet is selected by its two factions — Labor Left and Labor Right — in proportion to their caucus numbers. Labor Left picks its ministers from a national pool, while Labor Right divvies its allocation among the states — proportional to caucus representation — and lets each state Right faction choose its own ministers. Once the factions have filled their quotas, the Prime Minister assigns portfolios, determining who sits in Cabinet versus the outer ministry. The Prime Minister directly appoints all assistant ministers and special envoys (junior cabinet positions) without caucus input. Under a Prime Minister's Pick system, the leader of the ALP would chose which caucus members receive ministerial portfolios, and which roles they fill.

  • This house prefers a world where the two-kingdoms doctrine was the dominant Christian worldview

    Infoslide

The traditional ontological belief in Christianity is predicated by a hierarchical theory of structure, where authority flowed from the top down, and laws—both moral and civil—were seen as expressions of this divinely ordained structure, with the church playing a central role in interpreting God’s will and enforcing moral order. In contrast, the Two-Kingdoms doctrine holds that there is a separation between the divine and the earthly. In this view, all people and institutions in the earthly realm are equal in nature and authority. Law in the earthly kingdom is judged by human reason and justice rather than divine hierarchy, and no person or institution mediates another’s relationship with God.
