  • This house believes that social movements should adopt symbolic politics rather than traditional activism

    Infoslide

In comparison to traditional activism which prioritises policy change and institutional reform, “symbolic politics” involves taking symbolic control over public spaces by disrupting the local order. This is done through the use of symbols, rituals and narratives and is less centred on conveying information. Rather, the activists' purpose is to influence public opinion by putting together an emotionally compelling performance. Examples include the choreography "A Rapist in Your Path" against sexual violence in Latin America, the transnational movement FEMEN who use nudity to protest and paint slogans on the activists' bodies, etc

Instead of the agreed-upon reproductions, Haaning delivered the museum two blank canvases titled _Take the Money and Run_ (2021), accompanied by a single-line email explaining that the blank frames should replace the older works. In a subsequent settlement, Haaning returned the museum's money and agreed for the museum to display the blank frames, alongside a printed version of Haaning’s email, as the exhibition's new work.

  • This House prefers the values of 'zhen ji' to those of Western authorship.

    Infoslide

In Chinese cultural tradition, "zhen ji" is the idea of creation as a continuous and collaborative process. Works and products do not hold value for being original or unique, but for their quality and capacity for transformation. Successive contributions, such as poetic seals (xian zhan) or technical improvements, increase the value of the creation. Replicas (fuzhi) can be as valuable as the "original," and there is no condemnation of plagiarism. This also underpins the concept of "shanzhai" present in Chinese technological culture, such as "Nokir" cell phones or parodic films, which often surpass the originals. In contrast, the Western view tends to value originality and individual authorship as essential to the value of a creation, both in art and in inventions, technology, and cultural products.

Oracles are rare: only a few hundred exist at the same time, distributed proportionally to the population around the world.
