  • This house believes that the Dutch government should ban all depictions and public cosplays of Black Pete

    Infoslide

Sinterklaas is an annual month-long Dutch tradition celebrated by over 70% of the population. Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) comes every December to give presents to children. The Sint is accompanied by his servants traditionally known as Black Pete. Black Pete helps the Sint with all his work, e.g. sailing his boat, delivering presents to nice children through the chimney, beating naughty children with a stick and taking them in a bag to Spain. Black Pete is traditionally a racial caricature with black painted skin, colourful attire, black curly hair, and big red lips. There was a period of significant public debate about ’Black Pete’ in the Netherlands between 2012 and 2020, which divided the country with heavy and sometimes violent protests on both sides, boycotts, and extensive media and political attention. In recent years however, this debate has largely died down as the vast majority has embraced less controversial versions such as 'Chimney Sweep Pete' (with a few stripes of chimney soot) and 'Color Pete' (in all colours of the rainbow). Although the use of 'Black Pete' has become largely controversial, there are still areas of the country in which it is used and subsets of the population amongst which it is popular.

  • This house would ignore the SCOTUS decision by considering race, in isolation, when selecting and advocating for BIPOC applicants

    Infoslide

In June 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down Harvard and UNCs’ admissions programs for considering race, in isolation, when evaluating applicants (and thus race-based affirmative action). However, the decision noted that universities may still consider an applicant's discussion of how race has affected their life, as long as it is concretely tied to that applicant’s unique abilities or character traits. At Harvard, admissions decisions are ultimately made by the full admissions committee, members of which advocate for applicants. You are a member of Harvard's full admissions committee who screens applicants from your region and sends the most promising ones to the committee.
