Wilde was prosecuted on charges of sodomy, and passages from the novel were recited in court as proof of his immorality. Dorian Gray was Wilde's only novel, and his

  • That we oppose the Relatability Turn

    Infoslide

The Relatability Turn is a recent shift in the study and production of literature which encourages readers to relate to specific experiences of hardship by marketing them as transcendent of their context, as opposed to analysing them as unique and particular. Examples include, reading stories of queer oppression as universally applicable stories about the triumph of love, or stories of racial oppression as in some sense relatable to those who have experienced other forms of isolation.

  • This House, as a queer individual living in a country that occupies the liminal space between criminalisation and social acceptance, would choose to migrate to a queer-friendly country

    Infoslide

In anthropological studies, a "liminal space" refers to a space in the midst of transitioning from one form to another. For instance, a liminal space for a queer individual could be one wherein homosexuality is no longer criminalised, but there is not yet social acceptance of queer individuals. In these liminal spaces, it is widely believed that transition will happen, but it is unclear when and how long the transition would take. A case study of this is Singapore where homosexual sexual acts are decriminalised, but the government retains a status quo of purportedly discriminatory policies against LGBTQ+ individuals. It is widely believed that social acceptance of queer individuals is a matter of when, not if, but it is unclear when that acceptance will happen.

  • This House believes that the emphasis on wokeness in today's political discourse brings more harm than good

    Infoslide

Wokeness, originating as a slang used by Black activists, is generally accepted as the idea that you’ve woken up to racial and social injustices around you, seen how oppression has been institutionalized and now are unable to un-see this truth. Essentially, once you’re woke, you can’t fall asleep. In today's discourse, the practice of wokeness is often emphasized in societal discourses, including but not limited to the expansive use of gender pronouns, pushing back against privilege of dominant groups (the white, the men, the cis, etc.), cancel culture, among others. Many associate wokeness with being extremely left-wing (i.e. for maximum egalitarianism and opposing social hierarchy) in the political spectrum.
